With needle felting, for example, you are learning how to judge what fibre and needles you have. How to know what the right amount of fibre would be for each part. You'll be learning how to shape the limbs and to thread joint them all together! So yet another thing you need to learn is making a nice, simple nose. </p><p style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Often it's these things that we neglect to learn more about. We just muddle through when we get to this part and hope for the best. But the nose is just as important as the eyes and ears, the balance of the face really effects how your little character will turn out, and whether he is stern, cute, lovable, sad etc.</p><p style="clear: both; text-align: left;">For this tutorial I'm going to take you through making a basic nose, this is how I make most of my noses, I rarely get more technical unless I've made something larger or more deserving of something extra special. Why get super complicated if you don't have to right?</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEijq9s6Eq0ooc6Pqd6CeMAvvH0C3zwXDxmBLcS9UDk047YIYHVtglTzLXWSyKSNHgxTNld5ZYfXk-Taw71P2oej_5s2XhrSM8ckk4W-DVjLDsBKDSFym6tK21he5rICpEK9UqZ-vNFN5NdDync4kPHNHHO2HI15W4l-a5GM8CbMQsvmw_bVLB7eH7Q=s4000" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3000" data-original-width="4000" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEijq9s6Eq0ooc6Pqd6CeMAvvH0C3zwXDxmBLcS9UDk047YIYHVtglTzLXWSyKSNHgxTNld5ZYfXk-Taw71P2oej_5s2XhrSM8ckk4W-DVjLDsBKDSFym6tK21he5rICpEK9UqZ-vNFN5NdDync4kPHNHHO2HI15W4l-a5GM8CbMQsvmw_bVLB7eH7Q=s320" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">So to start off with you will already have your head and be ready to start the nose. I use the finest crochet thread you can find, this is thick and usually I use black or brown, but you can also use embroidery thread (the kind that comes as 6 threads together) and just split it into 3 threads or less. Thread it onto a longish needle (one that can go right through your head as you will need to do that a couple of times) and use it as a single length with no knot.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">In the photo above you can see the needle has gone into the back of the bears head and the point is coming out roughly where the lower bottom corner of the nose would be. Pull the thread until the end just disappears into the back of the thread.</div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEip7N3Tox2CS--qe482XR6AbvmoBUbNL7rg0HY_deFKWBkC8CEblThUdCxVvHCiExgk52sKvZHPr2oZRyAU7znW7_oZOobnU2J4lswDsWXEECIS15EH9VV4jAFM8pzDQwZpVkI-xaDbFtIHnZQD3hcJXNVZiYElDMAiO9YYU5txyO_ZYnJyv2124Qc=s4000" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3000" data-original-width="4000" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEip7N3Tox2CS--qe482XR6AbvmoBUbNL7rg0HY_deFKWBkC8CEblThUdCxVvHCiExgk52sKvZHPr2oZRyAU7znW7_oZOobnU2J4lswDsWXEECIS15EH9VV4jAFM8pzDQwZpVkI-xaDbFtIHnZQD3hcJXNVZiYElDMAiO9YYU5txyO_ZYnJyv2124Qc=s320" width="320" /></a></div><p style="text-align: center;">Here you can see me taking the needle into what would be the top of the nose, above where the thread is coming out. We will be doing a running kind of stitch, making loops in and out along the nose.</p><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgmFb7_T58qZQbueYpA3BMWiRQYOAFD0YKdhycgLTUjKU_yWnF7wPVa3l4tIe41k5pqSAKXxK9pSI7kBeutHZjeW4N7RllNV4WRLoUULmXIKOGZBJ5Sax5dVZwyCYy5OCBScR3_ShetMwVorMC2jFvJNkriCVTeH9Y46tfOTKqsLFrg7wsRtxsPG0Q=s4000" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3000" data-original-width="4000" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgmFb7_T58qZQbueYpA3BMWiRQYOAFD0YKdhycgLTUjKU_yWnF7wPVa3l4tIe41k5pqSAKXxK9pSI7kBeutHZjeW4N7RllNV4WRLoUULmXIKOGZBJ5Sax5dVZwyCYy5OCBScR3_ShetMwVorMC2jFvJNkriCVTeH9Y46tfOTKqsLFrg7wsRtxsPG0Q=s320" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">You can see above I have made several stitches, working across the nose from one side to the other. You will take a stitch in exactly where the thread is coming out, bring it across the back of the head in a large stitch and exiting somewhere else on the back of the head. Do this at least twice so that you have anchored off and not made any stitched. Pull firmly and cut under tension so that the thread disappears back into the head.</div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjR5iIu3J_Siq7v95LTkb_Hfe_v65JTg0uYSp1PTm6IYLCD6PN-mHy-fMIRtyGy3-ZhXXrs70f9pXMmiPWkZdqm9-zhiL-QLa0WGNCT4HKy9N6EZJ1iBDt9pStOUhGKQipDz10y8AkGOIIVETUYfM4hG5YRUh6NBxBgXZhM1hIzZV0pQYhPvxXm8Ek=s4000" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3000" data-original-width="4000" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjR5iIu3J_Siq7v95LTkb_Hfe_v65JTg0uYSp1PTm6IYLCD6PN-mHy-fMIRtyGy3-ZhXXrs70f9pXMmiPWkZdqm9-zhiL-QLa0WGNCT4HKy9N6EZJ1iBDt9pStOUhGKQipDz10y8AkGOIIVETUYfM4hG5YRUh6NBxBgXZhM1hIzZV0pQYhPvxXm8Ek=s320" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">And you are done! So glad to see you again! I thought you might like a quick tutorial for making some really basic wings for you Mini Bears and other creatures! This is an excerpt from my book so if you want to learn how to make the bear as well please check it out in your local library or bookstore! :)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /><br /></div><img alt="" border="0" data-original-height="2664" data-original-width="4000" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7WcdcxdF9vuS08R1AYw8uz_vsTYIdBlyEEi7YN9uQGoZQ5lE1zSRXJrrd7ucBX7b7-e76aKciF0Zv8s9P1F7Ap5KmqQdt24q5RXswG4lNqyKcLx-7TD-Vp7m-1xMF9KRt_FVuhn_sVbU/s400/IMG_4952.JPG" width="400" /></div><div class="separator" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">To start with you will need a permanent marker, shrink plastic, scrap paper, a single hole punch and scissors. If you don't have shrink plastic have a rummage through your recycling. You can actually use certain plastics you already have. I've had success with the clear kind of plastics you get some foods in. These are very light, clear, disposable plastics. In New Zealand we use them for protecting baked goods and berries in our supermarkets but you might need to research for your country! When shrinking just use a low temp oven and keep an eye on them.</div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMoyTpZYaqXbCj689T579q3cck1Zm68hf3das8ufdurPJZzRdgGUOOBdjoYan0fVn0ylazIq_5s6hWgGKmtPrFLrQ8ijyCE27ym4p50EqmmcYl2IvmkznbTMyB7UHRwCZqFwvPnN_sb54/s4000/IMG_4953.JPG" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0px; text-align: center;"><img alt="" border="0" data-original-height="2664" data-original-width="4000" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMoyTpZYaqXbCj689T579q3cck1Zm68hf3das8ufdurPJZzRdgGUOOBdjoYan0fVn0ylazIq_5s6hWgGKmtPrFLrQ8ijyCE27ym4p50EqmmcYl2IvmkznbTMyB7UHRwCZqFwvPnN_sb54/s400/IMG_4953.JPG" width="400" /></a>On your paper draw out some little wings. Floss is easy to tie and very strong.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhncmrz1vB4cPhYBhglI0wN6DiyPUMe3HlITix3SXb5hlVk1PAZapSBit_B22M2G0bZWKA9RpNbeICCYe8JV2JQI67p5mJcTsHwJaQn0WbaP-33oVFd6etjm38OBZ1vDmN70PCjiQu8Zbg/s2048/71+Placement.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhncmrz1vB4cPhYBhglI0wN6DiyPUMe3HlITix3SXb5hlVk1PAZapSBit_B22M2G0bZWKA9RpNbeICCYe8JV2JQI67p5mJcTsHwJaQn0WbaP-33oVFd6etjm38OBZ1vDmN70PCjiQu8Zbg/s320/71+Placement.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgw2x__W6g1d6UiOe-WB0rhO2Qiv5Uno5ykpaejxuoldl69lqgU-a0_oQsGkjH4qMB4uO4r7NoD52fe4LdR8uCaw5ruftMefRLqDZSXbIkMNCZZzw6Vv6mvcfnpB0KT42dNDK-ZNM4fnXg/s2048/72+Joint.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgw2x__W6g1d6UiOe-WB0rhO2Qiv5Uno5ykpaejxuoldl69lqgU-a0_oQsGkjH4qMB4uO4r7NoD52fe4LdR8uCaw5ruftMefRLqDZSXbIkMNCZZzw6Vv6mvcfnpB0KT42dNDK-ZNM4fnXg/s320/72+Joint.jpg" width="320" /></a> First lay your creation out with the parts where you will want them to be when they are attached, so each arm and leg on the side where it will be attached.</p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p>Then, taking about 12 inches of floss (I measure it from my wrist to my elbow to save getting a ruler out) thread about 2 inches of the floss through the needle.</p><p>Take the needle INTO the inside of the leg, where it will touch the body, and out the other side.</p><p><br /></p><p><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbXRML39xWWTdAtEQ0BoJdDOxsEj38xL5p52Gi3rl-5nOb8SnnUVAOWBCGUVXTPphFve6swBHFoUKeUqWmZVhRvRAknftCH312UvpGGUZe0U77Z4cgQ0mP-hzElUKustYEpzkIwHpriN0/s2048/73+Joint.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbXRML39xWWTdAtEQ0BoJdDOxsEj38xL5p52Gi3rl-5nOb8SnnUVAOWBCGUVXTPphFve6swBHFoUKeUqWmZVhRvRAknftCH312UvpGGUZe0U77Z4cgQ0mP-hzElUKustYEpzkIwHpriN0/s320/73+Joint.jpg" width="320" /></a></p><p></p><p><br /></p><p>Here you can see the floss going through the leg and the amount of thread left for tying off at the end. Finish tying the knot but then flip your work over and TIE IT AGAIN on the other side! We aren't done yet though so DON'T CUT IT YET!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVYzPNIPLWPduu6d3MOWCct0hxJjRvc3hhxmjObdFkgnfiggJ4bEtMdYEptp1iKP0vQQUOTUcZPa-gfwQw38HxKgpSt4_f8uE9VqS-LNqqGfB-Zk5fVU3ZZVJVRPWPPdg2JxB6OhK8HpA/s2048/81+Joint+Bury+Thread.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVYzPNIPLWPduu6d3MOWCct0hxJjRvc3hhxmjObdFkgnfiggJ4bEtMdYEptp1iKP0vQQUOTUcZPa-gfwQw38HxKgpSt4_f8uE9VqS-LNqqGfB-Zk5fVU3ZZVJVRPWPPdg2JxB6OhK8HpA/s320/81+Joint+Bury+Thread.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>Now take your needle and re-thread the floss back onto it, both pieces. Once threaded onto the needle, take the point of the needle BETWEEN the leg and the body, push the needle into the body and it can come out anywhere you like, that doesn't matter too much as long as it doesn't come out the other leg!! :)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOQu8KmQK2fH9bnxeSYnAebrJyQYnRkRwmYy0b6KtmKYr1vlFzGminfIE_4bjaSMd7BPRY_6TIBRg1ctHw8XA5ItBZBdTZ1Y6UvVRFPQZ525oOcxEROpu_yZJny2uLqJDhyphenhyphenu-cBp0Xk-o/s2048/81+Joint+Cut+Tension.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOQu8KmQK2fH9bnxeSYnAebrJyQYnRkRwmYy0b6KtmKYr1vlFzGminfIE_4bjaSMd7BPRY_6TIBRg1ctHw8XA5ItBZBdTZ1Y6UvVRFPQZ525oOcxEROpu_yZJny2uLqJDhyphenhyphenu-cBp0Xk-o/s320/81+Joint+Cut+Tension.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>Pull it right through, then cut the thread UNDER TENSION, so that means that while you are pulling firmly, you are cutting with your other hand. a small amount of fibre, perhaps enough to fit into your fist when closed, mix

<br />
It's been some time since I posted here, but hopefully you have been following the facebook page; <a href="http://www.facebook.com/LittleHandfuls">www.facebook.com/LittleHandfuls</a> there you can see all the latest news and newest bears!<br />
<br />
Hopefully you are already aware of my new book which hits the shelves in April this year! So not long to go now and you could be following along with me, learning how to make lots of different items and eventually creating your own little felted critters!<br />
<br />
The idea of my book is to teach you each technique needed for your bears and friends but in a way that you can make something useful or cute as you go. So learn a skill, create a unique piece to use or give as a gift!<br />
<br />
Once you have learnt how to make a jointed bear you are then shown lots of ways to make unique critters to keep your work interesting and show your flair!<br />
<br />
If you haven't joined up on the fb page I hope you will pop over and do it now. Then you can keep getting updates and see sneak previews of the book and other fun items!<br />
<br />
Drop by anytime and if you are already felting I am happy to help with anything you might be stuck on or need ideas for.<br />
<br />
Happy felting<br />
<br />

<br />
I hope you managed to drop in to the last online show, my wee bears just flew out the door as it were as I sold more than half of the show bears along with a few others that were awaiting adoption!<br />
<br />
There is another show coming up which I was very lucky to get in to so another 10 new bears will be unveiled in a few weeks!<br />
<br />
Remember to keep checking in on my facebook page, you can always see what's new there and I like to post a few teaser pics for the show to keep you guessing.<br />
<br />
More news on the upcoming book. It will be available for sale in the US from April next year. I'm guessing that will be a worldwide release so I can sell them online anywhere else in the world after that too. We also have book 2 under way!<br />
<br />
Watch this space! ;)<br />

Hi everyone!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Hope you had a wonderful Christmas and New Year! There's been a lot of happenings here at Little Handfuls, I'm still working on my book as you can see by the sample cover photo below. It's almost done and will be at the publishers by March this year. There are some great new projects in there to get people from beginner to bear artist!</div>

<br />
Our puppies are a year old now, they are so much fun and devoted little souls. They have made our family so much brighter after the awful year we had before they arrived. Teddy is a chunky little bear and Lottie is her passive aggressive lil sister.<br />
<br />

<br />
I've got two kids at college this year, quite a shocking development for me. Wasn't ready for my little girl to start this year. Choosing a college was excruciating and emotional, glad we got it all sorted.<br />
<br />
Hubby is struggling with shift work, his office started putting them on shifts a few months ago and it's been a huge adaption for us all. Not fun and no idea how long we can handle it!<br />
<br />
My day job is a bit of a mess, but having some regular pocket money is helpful, especially when those school fees come in!<br />
<br />
I hope you all have got great plans for this year, I hope to start and finish my second book this year and attend some more great shows throughout New Zealand. I would love to do some outside of the country too, we will just have to see how we go!<br />

My family and I have had a few ups and downs, we had hoped this year would be better but the start hasn't been so great!<br />
<br />
We are plodding on though, and I've finally started creating again! I've made some lovely new bears, not nearly enough for the upcoming shows but we'll get there!<br />
<br />
I don't post on here nearly enough so if you want to see more or be kept up to date better do pop over to my facebook page:<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.facebook.com/LittleHandfuls">www.facebook.com/LittleHandfuls</a><br />
<br />
Also, there has been an imposter who has taken the Little Handfuls name that I've created and developed over the past 10 years! Yup this year is our 10th anniversary. This person is in the UK so hopefully things won't get too confusing although I do get a lot of his emails as people google Little Handfuls and get me, of course!! I tried to reason with him before his page went live etc but he wouldn't budge, said I hadn't been around when he checked out the name, yeah right!! So if you come across a strange page with scary looking critters on it that doesn't look familiar, then you are probably on his page and not mine, so...run away as fast as you can! They seriously freak me out those critters!<br />
<br />
I just love my customers, I get so much love and support. I have people who even write and tell me if someone is copying my work, along with those who continue to buy and compliment my bears and friends. You are all awesome and I appreciate you all so much! I don't think I'd be back if it weren't for you!<br />
<br />
So here are a few little recent works, hope you will keep dropping by and feel free to write anytime!<br />
<br />
Bear hugs<br />

Hi Everyone!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Time for an update, Little Handfuls has had a big couple of months, not all good but as they say, whatever doesn't kill me makes me stronger!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We followed a tough month with a family break away thanks to my inlaws and really enjoyed the beach for a few days.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Now I'm heading into a new show season as I hit Auckland for 2 big shows, one this weekend 18 - 20 Oct and one on 30 November! I haven't done these ones before so fingers crossed!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I hope to do another show, this time the Raglan Twilight show just a few days before Christmas, will keep you posted on that one!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For now here are some new bears you won't have seen, they have just been uploaded to facebook which is where most of my work is shown, if you haven't found the page you please do drop by at:</div>
